▶

Summary

A Snowflake White marble reception desk cut like a diamond: many faceted faces joined at different angles. Mr Villa Stone walks the factory floor in Yunfu, China, and shows how the shape was point-modeled from a wooden mock-up — the same idea as motion-capture dots in film VFX — then joined face-to-face and recessed so the difficulty rises with every extra face. The finished desk looks natural, with raised sides and a recessed middle.

Today I'll show a diamond desk in Snowflake White. What's special about it? Unlike our usual desks, it uses a non-standard shape. One, two, three—many faces, like a diamond's facets. So where's the difficulty? The joints and the modeling take skill. Know how we built this shape's model? We used point-based modeling. You know how they make movies, like Avatar's effects? They stick dots on the body, face and hands, and those dots capture the body's movements, then model those moves. Ours is the same. First, we built a wooden box, and on every shape, we marked the matching points, then from those points, built it into a 3D model. Next hard part: joints. See, this face and this face join, face to face. Here, these two join inward, recessed. So it's not just two faces, but one, two, three, four—so the difficulty goes up geometrically. Now let's take in the whole effect. It's very natural, and great texture. See, these sides stick out. Come over here. This side pulls in toward the middle. Inside: recessed middle, bulging sides. This shape feels very high-tech, and very futuristic too. OK, back to the front. That's it for this video.
